also make sure the exe is common so other users you may have on your hobbyist system can use it
(like the one other user yr allowed besides system)

Figuring out how to extract those damn .bck files for the freeware cd's is a real PAIN in the ass because I didn't understand the command to do it until i found this gem of a real world example.
Geez you think it would be in one place like VMS for dummies or something. examples folks...real world examples so here is one for the above mentioned problem:

backup FREEWARE70_1.bck/save_set [...]

simple yes?

nonetheless, the system is such a puzzle, and that is the fun part.

How to do shit on vms:

REGISTER your licenses AFTER you install the OS. (hell man,
it's like 105 DIFFERENT entries for the alpha pak's, sure you
could only enter what you think you need, but I entered them
all, except for the language based PAK's I knew there was no
way in hell I'd ever use Japanese PHIGS?? you get the
picture.) Of course pretty soon after the install get the license in there for
DW-MOTIF so you at least have a window manager, AND THE DV'S FOR THE NETWORK STUFF

of course you have to set up decnet and tcp/ip before ftp'ing anywhere...
which means you just need to follow the order of operations in chapter 7 of the post install
document here:

FTP'ing = ya dont forget to set it as 'binary' [ha ha on me] if you want to
download anything real. what a freaking hurdle that was.

how to unzip a file on openvms:

unzip :== $sys$sysroot:[SYSEXE]unzip.exe
unzip xyz-zip-file.zip

of course if that is where you saved the downloaded .exe file.

when downloading with FTP>
don't forget to set binary, otherwise you can't get shit

like this at the ftp prompt:

FTP> binary (then hit enter)
oh yeah btw all the commands for ftp are in lower case unix ,
haha (cd, ls, get, connect.. etc)

first thing you want to get is a web browser.
ftp into ftp.hp.com/pub/openvms and cd into a folder called
CSWB

its a mozilla based browser, (seamonkey)

ftp it onto yr favourite old school last computer
workstation made in america Digital DEC pws alpha
(don't forget the binary!)

btw if you didn't set up a user account completely and are
running on the system account, the ftp client downloads into
SYSMGR folder, not the login folder, ya I'm lazy sorry, just
did the minimal UAF so I could install tcp/ip and
decnet-plus

do this next

RUN CSWB-OPENVMS-ALPHA-V1112.SFX_

AXPEXE

that long string after RUN is the file you downlaoded from
the cswb folder at ftp.hp.com. follow the prompts it's
pretty straightforward. when you go to launch the program

@SYS$COMMON:[CSWB]MOZILLA

(hey, don't drive yourself crazy, let the software install
into the default places)

you might get it complaining about FILLM quota's. it might
say [NO]: I say YES and type it after the prompt. All
right a real browser serving up webpages on a really old
machine. God, I love this thing.

I remember I was interviewed by the Hartford Courant back in 2004/2005 as to why I had converted to Catholicism. The answer was simple, in all it's eloquent and logical explanations, science had failed to answer the why? It was good at telling me about HOW something happens and WHAT takes place, but the why? no way science gets a big fat F. The liturgical service of the Catholic Mass gives you the answer at every mass. The mystery of life. The liturgy is at least honest enough to say it is a mystery whereas an academician is more likely for instance when asked about the true nature of gravity that the question is not relevant. (that would be because they don't know the answer and are too arrogant to admit it.)
and there you have it....

many people often asked me for some apologist explanation for many things in this world, especially the unjust events. Ya, I can not answer those questions because I don't have the answer.

I wish I could help every single victim in this world... I wish behaviour which demeans and abuses life could be eliminated from the earth. But I can't eliminate it. Does this mean 'God" is a cold heartless entity? I don't know. What I know is this. Do good, try to harm none and always try to act with humility.

I know there are people who walk this earth in complete bliss, that they have escaped somehow the attachments of things, but that sort of meditation is certainly a walking death, no closer to life than real death. An enmeshment.

I know there are people who walk this earth in complete possession. Gripped by the overwhelming and forever pervasive attachment of things. This is also an enmeshment as the detachment of things is.

I do not walk the earth in possession. I walk it in obsession.

You the indolent and the slovenly, pre-possessed.

The maker of this universe is volent, impecunious and sardonic. Sullen, bored, a monger supreme. Too attach ethical markers, as not phenomenologically evident, as well as the very existance of such an 'entity" , are our attachments.

I know there are people who walk this earth, quite content with an arrangement sketched out which fits the phenomonological, but barely answers any of the fundemental issues. The point and the line. Their supposition of truth is equally blind.

here is another day, another moment. again plagued with the question why. could I, or should I or would I be some ambassador of awakening? none-the-less the inability to decisively terminate the relationship with the universe is wholly based on the level of "enmeshedness." At times I feel it's complete absurdity, at other times I can not escape it absurdity by virtue of fear of pain in attempting escape.

Have you ever wondered why you struggle to stay alive when clearly the easy way is not to try? I think because the pain of the struggle is lighter than the pain of escape. If it were easier not to try, then that would it not be the preferred choice of billions, but we know from the facts before us this is not the case. Some sense of logic dictates that not to struggle is in some way conserving energy which becomes bastardized AND plasticized into a path of least resistance. Yet in what appears to be the face of this absurdity we call life, we continue to engage. It is a matter of enmeshment. As an insect awaiting its expiration in the web long after the struggle ceases, only an incredible act of desperation and strength of conviction allows one to choose the "easy way", which means it is not the easy way, but the hard way, the struggle to overcome chemistry and it's enmeshment at a chemical and atomic and sub atomic and post atomic level.

The naked face of truth will never be revealed to us, nor some "cosmic" understanding on however many dimensions you wish to postulate or conjure. It's face appears to us as enmeshment. The components or dimensions of the enmeshment are the aperceptible and the perceptible. All other arguments are distractions, mental play toys and entertainment. The items only phenomenologically available to us and everything else which does not fall into this category are those two siblings.

The endless twittering of philosophists, the endless machinations of ethics, epistemology, existentialism, of endless and eternal postulations on the human experienced shivved an untold number of times over and over again, ground from shavings into dust, infinitely.

The endless twittering of the materialists, and the religious, and the people who have to have the lastest and greatest. Who can only see past their noses by a few feet.

That we, as annihilators, convert the raw potential into piles of dust, not only of our phenomenological perceptions of "matter", but also those same perceptions of "being" or "time" or physics and again this paragraph can become another exercise in reduction and annihilation to dust.

I propose this:

That we do nothing. That we let what we so lovingly call "earth" go to a fucking cesspool hell, as all things will in the "natural" way. My only hope is that when it gets really difficult, a threshold will be reached, which will result in the immediate annihilation of the planet. 50 to 60 thousands years later an air will blow across this planetary face like the wind that blew on the face of the earth long before we set spark to the land.

Yes we are living in a republic which is merely repeating history. As stories go it is a great one, but again here are the signs our country is headed for empire: I Started righting this blog and then realised it's wickedly political implications, so I have sanitised it for those who may be offended by its more critical original state.

This sweet time, but dry not ot wet and sultry like a summer day in new england late in the afternoon early evening. I loaded the track "a long fucking time" from the cd stoned onto dekal.musicv2.com. must be a fan of metal machine music and feldman if you want the whole hour...i find some of my titles will not fit onto cd, may have to do dvd or special reel to reel format. let me know. In California the sun always shines and wind is dry. I t reminds me of iceland without the water, though in some places during the winter it is alot like an icelandic spring.

in Arcadia this week man the san gabs r nice in the clear winter air. Palomar rules though. so freaky sites up there plus the STARS ARE SO CLEAR IN RIVERSIDE COUNTY. Interesting thing to note, the name of the newest dekal album is crystal black: highway to the fucking stars-- and don't you know the road going up Palomar to the observatory is called the 'highway to the stars '... providence once again, just being where i am supposed to be.

anyway web based applications are making some fantastic inroads including the youos and other awesome Ajax apps, all hail the return of the mainframe. it is interesting because IBM is coming out blazing on the mainframe with Linux admin go baby big blue go! say good bye to the blade server unless of course you want to host your own server, but i say the mainframe cost will be so competitive you won't want the hassle of admin'ing yr own blade when renting the space and services on a big blue or Hitachi or Fujitsu mainframe will be cheaper... hey which brings me back full circle to
COBOL.

ya COBOL... you heard me right now if i could only get the fucking gcc compiler to compile and link a COBOL source code I'd be made in the shade, but i don't want to fork out the cash for some big expensive software solution... we watch things. say movies or events unfold and though we may get news late or view what we already may know we always insist on not knowing the ending. we say "don't ruin the end for me." somehow not knowing the end gives us a comfort that there is always something new to be discovered, which grows from our amazing propensity for the novelty. as a friend once said desire is infinite.

for the new human, with only finiteness, it is interesting that infinite variation appeals to us. for many people the familiar, no matter how ghastly it can be is much preferred to some unknown panacea. knowing what you know is more comforting than knowing what you do not know. now that is sufficient for those situations whereof familiarity is sedentary, but in situations of unfamiliarity; the presentment of novelty and infinite desire is all the more; not knowing the ending is too remain aloof to the terminable.

when the party is over or the game is done, who resists the feeling of wistfulness. pining for a unique unknown at the moment it becomes known. seeing it like a trinket in your favourite hobby store. one among many to be coveted.

we will all suffer disastrous consequences of incredible severity and billions of poeple will die in the process. we currently do not have the means to spread our filth off the planet, so we will end up sleeping in our own shit and ultimately dying in it as well.

so the new year is upon us and the attendant celebrations insofar as we have been able to pass another year on this planet without completely destroying it. in the eye of the deist; the world is a forgone conclusion, and as such a passing matter complete with design and a higher agency. For nought our mission is ongoing and that there is a PURPOSE in our being. There is no need for apology either. The explorations of our micro and macrocosms continues unabated; funded of course by our incessant need for entertainment to alleviate the 'burden of sentience TM'.

if we embark on a purposeful risk assessment; it is here that our greatest challenge lies. Not in the mapping of our consciousness or it's explanation (lol), but in the necessity to acquire further high potential resources. To assume that we have reached the end point on our explanation of consciousness is sheer arrogance. mapping our consciousness is not a risk factor, resource acquisition is. as metals become fixed in unusable salts or oxide compounds, the risk is increasingly ever presented as the shortage of high potential materials. this does not bode well for our species as our current technology is so dependant on these said materials.

organic carbon and silicon based technologies may hold the key. by its virtue of sheer plenitude; both materials may provide an inexhaustible resource or at the least a cyclic resource which could be powered by the energy that falls on the planet daily. the drawback in this scenario is the fixing of carbon in polymer chains which are covalently very strong and not easily rendered back to base ingredients. the other challenge is the fixing of materials in volatile organic compounds which prove difficult to handle on a planet wide scale by their very nature.

the nature of our ability to recognise an endless self referencing loop and our ability to terminate the loop is critical to understanding how technologies of the future must be developed. the good news is the terminator is in the works. how we apply this is the hope.

this tuesday uneventful as any other tuesday is where there begins an interesting exercise in fidelity. a scant three month ago, i had just launched upon the most terrifying and exciting time of my life. that it could be a dream as always those dreams torment me i know not. the fidelity of 20 years of rage, prior there would have sufficed a tear, a tantrum, a devious twist of drama, but now newly honed and revealed, its shroud cast about as detritus, was this pure venom of angst.

stripped me of all the possessions i thought were dear, but alas determinedly saccharine. with that stripping came the stripping of fear and the comforts of knowing that doing was not really doing; nor required thinking, for if one is to think, really really hard, one is quite pressed to explain anything with any precision we call truth.
